Various opinions to child labor

There are some people who agree with child labor. They say that they agree with it on some accounts. They are saying that for these reasons. First, it is ok in the case that it is safe, there is no abuse, and it is for a good purpose. Second, child labor is fine as long as the children haven't developed phisical problems, still get reasonable educations, have a clean work environment, and the employer is not abusive. Third, it is not a problem if children aren't forced to do the work and have free time. More than anything else, child labor is acceptable if the children themselves enjoy their works as the labor.
However, even if there is no condition like those any more, it is not possible to avoid a problem like child labor in the third world countries because there, they work just to survive. if they stop working, then not only the child but also his family will be affected. So in those countries, it is not easy problem for them to be against the idea of child labor. For example, child labor in Bangladish cannot be stopped. This is due to the lack of financial aid. And also, their parents don't even have the capabilities to buy food and clothes, or give primary educations to their child. Child labor is necessary, otherwise, how are they going to survive?

On the other hand, there is a person who say that whether we are for or against child labor, depends on our definitions of child labor. If it is simple chores, then I believe youngsters should undergo such training for their adulthood. However, if you are talking about miners and phisical labors, then I strongly disagree. Not only does that limit the for the kids to become historical figures, it also changes their mind and psychology. For example, they will see adults as "rapists, psychopaths, abusing and unfair". You see, people who are greedy and prefer prohit than people's lives, will choose children and female workers than males. Why? It is clear. The female and children are easier to control and to force to do phisical labor. Also, it is hard for them to enforce bigger wages. Overall, child labor is another definition of "stupidity".
I honestly think that children should really get the opportunity to live and have a childhood. I don't believe that children should work at a young age. They should concentrate on school works and school-related activities so that they can form their individual behaviors and identities before deciding on who they are and what they want to do with their lives. So I disagree.

  1. We have done the presentation of some perspectives on child labor on the class in universitiy.

We received many comments. I write some of them below.

・The problem is, making child work hard and long, so it's not possible to say that children can enjoy working and so it is not a good reason to support child labor. I think we should stop child labor.

For any situation and definition of child labor I think it depends on the children, who are forced to work, to decide it is a good thing or not.

・I wonder if the children really enjoy their jobs. I don't think so. It is hard to imagine children working, I have never seen them really.

・I agree with his idea. Child labor should be stopped.

・I think people who support child labor are rare. I agree that child shouldn't do work.

・I agree children should be given enough education. To achieve that, more financial support.

・I surprised there are some people in the world who agree child labor. I strongly agree his opinion that children should get education in younger age.

・I don't think children enjoy their job. They are unwillingly forced to work, so we have to prioritize child's feeling. If they needs job, we also have to provide education to them. I thought people who choose children is so cruel. Children is not slave, but human. We have to give children the right to study.

・I understand child labor doesn't stop because there are some people who think like this person. I agree with him. I want children to study as much as they want to.

・I think working to survive is very sad, but in 3rd world countries, this happens all the time. I agree that if there is no physical abuse, child labor is accepted. I strongly agree that child labor mentally hurt them and limits their future. Children should be aware of who they are and their individuality should be respected.

・I was against child labor, but if these are the fact, I can agree with child labor.

・This opinion really ignores the damage that child labor can cause if it deprives children of a chance to get an education, of opportunities to play and to freely do what they want to do. I think a definition of child labor is fairly clear. If the work they do is done for so long that they have no time for recreational and educational opportunities, child labor is prohibited.

  2. Thanks for reporting the feedback from your classmates (and me) so thoroughly, Kosuke. Your presentation really stimulated a lot of careful reflection by your classmates and led them to think hard about a difficult and complicated topic. I was a little surprised that one person said, "I was against child labor, but if these are the fact, I can agree with child labor." You probably didn't intend to persuade people to support child labor. Were you surprised by that, too?
